Writing a practical workplace training-needs brief

A needs brief prevents a familiar course title being mistaken for the required outcome.

Updated 2026-09-10

Describe current and required performance

Use observable work tasks, errors, changes or standards. Separate a lack of knowledge or skill from equipment, process or management issues that training cannot solve alone.

Profile the learner group

Record roles, experience, language, accessibility, work patterns, location and prerequisites. Protect personal information and share only what the provider needs.

Define evidence and follow-up

State how learning and workplace application will be checked, who supports transfer into practice and when the organisation will review the result.
